Storm

June 29
Friday

There was a strong storm today. The wind snapped the divided bole of a tree at my neighbors. One section severely damaged their boat; the other the pier. Much of its length lies in the water in front of my house. Two limbs fell onto my roof from a maple in the back yard. I heard and felt each fall but can see no damage. I was fortunate. Rain is needed, but the storm blew through so quickly it surrendered little.

I am disappointed for my neighbors. The moved in a month ago. I have spoken with the young man and his son, Jimmy and Adrian. I have not spoken except to exchange greetings with his wife. Her name is Ashley. They had been in the boat nearly every day. The man fished from the pier with the boy. She read and sunned there as well, watching the child play in the lake with his water wings.

I enjoy observing them with their son. They take pains to include him in their activities. I look forward to seeing them on their boat and pier again with the boy. I hope it will be soon. He is handsome, with shoulder length blond hair. When he runs or jumps his hair is an explosion of golden light. He has an unrestrained laugh that is a joy to hear. How many trees will fall in his life before that laugh becomes guarded?

Until their pier is repaired I invited them to fish from mine.

Little boy, the storm
spoiled your play; brought wind, hail--
and your shade tree fell.
