Saturday
This morning a young raccoon lay along the fallen tree. Perhaps he had been in there as it fell. Duke discovered him. Announcing and denouncing him with growls and barks until I quieted him.
The raccoon looked confused and frightened. His world may not have been turned upside down--but it has been twisted sideways. It is unusual to see raccoons in daylight, but this was not our first meeting. Three days ago as I sat at the table I watched him inch his way down the old maple in the back yard. He looked confused even then. He cannot have been on his own for long.
I know something of his bewilderment. Today is the final day of my pastorate at the United Methodist church in Wolf Lake, Indiana. It feels as though my life has been turned on its side. Tomorrow morning, I will be in a pew--not the pulpit--and in a different church into the bargain.
My world has changed. For thirteen years I served that church. It is hard to let go.
But I must leave the fallen tree.
Frozen in fear
the young raccoon
cannot leave the fallen tree.
